This weekend the South African Race Walking Championships will take place in Cape Town on 11 October 2014. The events will range from 50km Senior Men and Women to 3km Junior Events. And from a personal note, im looking forward to seeing how the 50km plays out. I will be competing in the 20km as an individual and treating it as a training event.

SA Race Walking Championships – 11 October 2014 – Youngsfield Military Base, Cape Town
We have about 177 athletes from all over SA competing in distances ranging from 50km down to 3km. The Championships start at 06:00 with the 50km and will end after prize-giving at about 14:00.
In the Provincial competition the Provinces that will walk it out for the Provincial trophies are Central Gauteng Athletics, Athletics Gauteng North and Western Province Athletics. Western Province placed in the top 3 in the Provincial competition for the past 4 years, winning in 2012.
Walkers to look out for:
- Marc Mundell in the 20km – Current SA and Africa 50km record holder, represented SA at London Olympics 2012
- Lebogang Shange in the 20km – Current SA 20km Champion, Current African Champion in 20km. Walks on international circuit.
- Anel Oosthuizen in the 20km – Current SA 20km Champion, Represented SA at numerous international events.
- Corli Swart – Represented SA at numerous international events.
In the Masters age categories you’ll see numerous SA record holders and Masters World Championship medalists walk in the 10km and 20km.
Athletes to look out for are Barbara Nell, Chris Britz and Jurgen Spencer.
In the Youth and Junior races you’ll see current SA Champions and Record holders, the most notable walker being SA walker Pierre Vermaak in the 10km.
The 3km and 5km events are filled with SA’s next generation of stars.
