Australian Race Walking Shows Depth

The Australian Open and Junior T&F Championshiops have now completed. The standard seemed very high to me and the walks were no exception. I reported in last week’s newsletter on the U17-U20 walks. This time around I can report on the remaining age groups. The walks action got underway again on Friday with the U15-U16 3000m and the Open 10,000m championships contested. The U16 and U15 boys were up first on Friday morning, with wins to Nelson McCutcheon (13:10.82) and Nikola Mandic (13:48.16). Lots of PBs. Special mention to Will Thompson with third in the U16 and a huge PB of 14:00.47.

The Open 10,000m track walks closed out Day 6 and both wins were outstanding. Dane Bird-Smith won last year’s National 10,000m with 38:44.61. This year, he improved a further 10 secs to win in an even better time of 38:34.23. Fellow Queenslander Katie Hayward at 16 became the youngest ever Australian 10,000m race walk champion with her winning time of 45:51.09. Overall, there were PBs galore, many of them by junior walkers. In the men’s race in particular, note that Tyler Jones, Kyle Swan, Adam Garganis and Luke McCutcheon are all aged 19 or under and all were well under 44 minutes. Of the Victorians, nearly all did PBs. Apart from those mentioned above, well done to Reese Walmsley, Simone McInnes and Emily

Hamilton on their PBs – and well done to coach Simon Baker who had 6 walkers in the field, with nearly all of them doing fastest ever walks. Now that is impressive.

The Open track walks used to feature every year as an integral part of the Australian T&F Championships but were discontinued after 1998. After a lot of badgering, Athletics Australia finally relented and allowed an invitational 5000m walk at the 2013 Australian T&F Championships in Sydney. The following year, 10,000m track walk championships were added to the official program, with Melbourne hosting the first scheduling.
